Suit seeks to overturn jail's magazine ban

ATLANTA, Oct. 23 (UPI) -- The sheriff of Fulton County, Ga., is being sued by a magazine editor after he banned county prisoners from receiving non-religious publications.

Paul Wright, editor of Prison Legal News, filed suit Monday against Sheriff Myron Freeman, claiming a 2002 lawsuit against former Sheriff Jackie Barrett resulted in a similar policy being declared unconstitutional, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported Tuesday.

"We've had some recidivist censors," Wright said Monday night. "The jails seem to make up policies as they go along. I guess they figured the federal judge was just kidding."

Prison Legal News, which was founded by Wright in 1990, publishes monthly issues that contain stories on prisoners' legal rights and the conditions within prisons and jails. He started the publication after he was released from a 17-year prison sentence for killing a drug dealer.
