Iowa Police Chief Arrested for Abusing Position to Stalk Ex-Girlfriend

by Kaden Gicker

In a shocking turn of events, the police chief of Kingsley, Iowa, James Dunn, was arrested by the state’s Department of Criminal Investigation on February 15, 2023, for abusing his power as a member of law enforcement to stalk his former girlfriend and others. The arrest followed a request made on February 13, 2023, by the Hinton Police Department to investigate possible criminal activity by Dunn.

According to reports from WHO 13 in Des Moines and KTIV in Sioux City, Dunn used his position as police chief to stalk a woman he had previously dated. After learning that she was in a new relationship, Dunn reportedly ignored his ex-girlfriend’s requests not to contact her, her family, or her friends. Dunn went as far as accessing a law enforcement database at the police station to gather information about her new boyfriend and his roommate and even taped a letter to the boyfriend’s door.

Dunn’s behavior did not stop there. He sent another letter to the boyfriend’s roommate, using materials paid for by the city to create the letters and went into detail about the activities of his ex-girlfriend and her new partner. Despite repeated requests from his ex-girlfriend to stay away, Dunn got in touch with her mother and complained to her about her daughter’s new boyfriend, making false claims that he was a criminal on probation and that her daughter had cheated on him.

Dunn was initially charged with stalking, misconduct in office, and improperly accessing “criminal intelligence.” However, court documents revealed that he had received an additional 16 charges relating to his alleged actions, bringing the total number of charges to 19.

According to court documents, Dunn’s ex-girlfriend claimed that she fears him and is concerned for her physical wellbeing, given that he is typically armed as the police chief. As a result, a request for an official no-contact order was filed.

This disturbing incident highlights the importance of holding those in positions of power accountable for their actions.

According to a recent update from KTIV on April 11, 2023, plea negotiations are currently underway in the case against Dunn.
