Virtual Reality Intervention Improves Police-Interaction Skills for Autistic Individuals

A clinical trial launched by researchers at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (“CHOP”) and Saint Joseph’s University found that mobile virtual reality (“VR”) training can improve police-interaction skills among individuals on the autism spectrum, with the strongest measured improvement appearing in reduced fidgeting during controlled live interactions.
Disabled individuals, including those with autism, face a disproportionately high risk of negative outcomes and violence during police encounters. Autistic individuals experience elevated rates of police contact compared to neurotypical peers. Unfamiliar social cues, unexpected commands, and sensory overload can cause extreme discomfort, which officers frequently misinterpret as noncompliance or erratic behavior.
The scale of the issue is substantial. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (“CDC”) 2025 autism surveillance report estimated that autism spectrum disorder had been identified among about 1 in 31 children aged 8 across 16 U.S. monitoring sites, and CDC guidance describes autism as involving differences in social communication, repetitive behaviors or interests, and different ways of learning, moving, or paying attention. In a police encounter, those traits may appear as avoided eye contact, delayed responses, repetitive movements, sensory distress, or difficulty processing rapid commands, increasing the risk that disability-related behavior will be mistaken for defiance or threat.
The findings of the research team, published in the Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders on May 6, 2026, offer a flexible response to this long-standing challenge in community policing. The team from the Center for Autism Research at CHOP reported their findings from a parallel and randomized controlled clinical trial. The trial was designed to examine and compare the effects of two different intervention programs that teach autistic individuals to manage their behavior before a possible interaction with law enforcement.
Recognizing that live tactical practice with actual officers is logistically and financially cost-prohibitive, researchers deployed the Floreo Police Safety Module. This VR framework allows users to repeatedly navigate high-stress police encounters within a safe, controlled environment.
The trial evaluated 47 autistic participants aged 12 to 60, assigning them to either the Floreo VR intervention or a traditional video-modeling control group, BeSAFE The Movie. Both groups completed three 45-minute sessions. The study measured efficacy through controlled live assessments. Before the intervention, participants interacted with study staff posing as police; after the intervention, they interacted with a uniformed police officer or security officer.
Both groups showed some skill acquisition, but the VR group showed the clearest improvement in the study’s strongest measured outcome. Post-intervention data showed that VR-trained participants exhibited significantly less fidgeting during controlled live interactions, a potentially important metric because repetitive movements may be misconstrued by law enforcement as suspicious or threatening. The study also reported improvements in appropriate responses and overall behavior after VR training, although the between-group interaction for those outcomes was not statistically significant, and the authors described the overall effects as relatively small.
The findings come with important limits. The researchers stressed that the primary solution remains proper autism- and disability-related training for police officers, with VR serving as a complementary tool to help autistic people practice for stressful encounters. The trial was also small, included a primarily white sample, excluded autistic individuals with co-occurring intellectual disability, and measured short-term performance in controlled interactions rather than outcomes in actual police encounters.
The study also disclosed that three authors were employed by Floreo Inc., maker of the VR program being evaluated, and another author had served as a paid Floreo consultant.
Recent law enforcement guidance underscores the officer-training gap. A June 2026 FBI Law Enforcement Bulletin article reported that most surveyed officers had responded to a call involving a person with autism in the prior year, while another survey found that 73% of officers reported no formal training on interactions with autistic people. Recent peer-reviewed research likewise found that autism-specific training improved officers’ autism knowledge and self-rated confidence. Together, those findings suggest that VR practice may be most useful when paired with officer training that teaches recognition, communication adjustments, sensory awareness, patience with delayed responses, and de-escalation.
That focus on officer training also aligns with the Americans with Disabilities Act framework, under which law enforcement agencies must make reasonable modifications to policies, practices, and procedures when necessary to ensure access for people with disabilities, unless doing so would fundamentally alter the service involved.
“Our findings show that this intervention can provide autistic individuals with generalizable skills and tools to help keep them safe,” stated senior author Dr. Julia Parish-Morris. By bridging the gap between digital simulation and controlled live practice, specialized VR training may provide one useful tool for reducing anxiety, mitigating friction, and improving safety during police encounters involving autistic people.
